The number of plastic bags used by supermarket customers has fallen by more than 4.6 billion a year according to the British Retail Consortium. This is about 40% less than the number handed out in 2006, when 10.7 billion bags were handed out by Britain's supermarket giants.
However despite the drop, the number of bags still being used remains a major environmental problem and DEFRA is currently conducting a major review into Britain's waste crisis, which includes the plastic bag issue.

Jane Davidson, Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing wants to introduce a mandatory charge for plastic carrier bags in Wales. Wales will actually be the first part of the UK to lead the way on this issue.
Although we have become much better at reusing bags over the last few years, similar actions have been taken taken against single-use carrier bags all over the world. And close to home the Republic of Ireland has proved how successfulm a charge can be and has seen the number of carrier bags used drop by 90% since introducing their charge in 2002.
Jane says that she hopes it will encourage everyone to shop with reusable bags wherever possible.

According to data which was released in 2001 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency on U.S plastic bag, sack and wrap consumption, it is estimated that between 500 billion and a trillion plastic bags are consumed on a wroldwide scale, each year!
Of those billions, millions end up in litter streams outside of landfills or trailing through lands and oceans alike.
Such bags have become such a problem that Taiwan, Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh and Ireland have heavily taxed these bags or banned them outright. According to Tony Lowes - Director of Friends of the Irish Environment in County Cork said that since 15 cents (about 20 cents U.S) tax on these bags has been introduced (since March 2002) there has been a 95% reduction in use!
